Common Conditions Treated with Acupuncture at Garuda Health
Today, I’d like to talk about acupuncture and the most common conditions I see and confidently treat here at Garuda Health.
In my over 10 years of practice, I have performed well over 25,000 acupuncture treatments and have a good deal of experience with the strengths of acupuncture and what it’s best at treating, but it’s difficult to get that info out to the public.
1. Pain
The most common complaint I successfully treat that most patients know about is pain. Regardless of whether it is acute, chronic, neuropathic (nerve), muscle, joint, inflammatory, etc. acupuncture can have a profound effect on pain by affecting the central nervous system and its experience of pain pathways. Muscle or visceral pain can be released by needling techniques that directly affect the muscle fibers while also changing the body's inflammatory reactions to be less severe. These effects can take place immediately and with continual treatment will change the ongoing experience a patient has with specific or generalized pain.
2. Headaches & Migraines
Although this is a type of pain migraines can have an aspect of internal medicine attached to them and how they manifest over the period of a month. In my experience most of these conditions are due to soft tissue damage in the neck & shoulders impacting blood flow to the head, acupuncture can help address the structural issue as well as quell the internal systems.
3. Neuropathy
Idiopathic neuropathy is where acupuncture excels over all other treatments. Meaning there is no obvious reason for why the patient is having neuropathy acupuncture helps reset the nervous system to stop experiencing this condition. Nerve impingement neuropathy can be helped by increasing the circulation to an area where a nerve is being pressed, either by releasing the soft tissue or speeding the healing of an obstruction. Chemo induced neuropathy is difficult to treat quickly since it chemically induced, but can be improved with acupuncture. MS induced neuropathy can be the most challenging to have an effect depending on the progression of the disease but some patients do experience relief.
3. Anxiety
Although I find herbal medicine to be far superior in the treatment of anxiety, I do find that in acute situations where a patient is feeling overwhelmed or has a high heart rate, acupuncture has a profound effect on resetting the nervous system and allowing the patient to move into a calmer state. Auricular acupuncture or ear acupuncture has a lot of data now for having a quick effect on the sympathetic nervous system.
4. Respiratory
Again, I find herbal medicine superior to treating allergies and breathing conditions, but acupuncture can be very helpful in the temporary relief of nasal congestion, opening the airways in the lungs, and reducing inflammation induced by infection or chronic pulmonary issues.
5. Vascular
Acupuncture works on the body by stimulating the nervous system to affect the body, it can achieve this by the nervous system’s effect on the vascular system. Improving the blood flow and getting things like hormones and nutrients to where they need to go around the body.
6. Digestive
Similar to respiratory conditions, acupuncture can help stimulate the movement of the digestive organs. Whether there is constipation affecting the intestines, acid reflux affecting the stomach, or generalized gastritis leading to various digestive disorders acupuncture can help calm and regulate the digestive organs.
7. Women’s Health
In a healthcare environment where there is very few options and treatments for various health concerns of women, its unfathomable why acupuncture is not pushed more for various menstrual conditions and fertility. Whether the complaint is painful cycles, irregular cycles, or the development of fibroids, acupuncture can help improve the blood flow to the reproductive organs and improve their function to operate with normal rhythm. This helps promote fertility when one is trying to get pregnant or undergoing IVF cycles.
8. Workout Recovery & Post Surgery
Acupuncture helps the body recover faster post workout. Improving the blood, unknotting muscles, and breaking up fibrous tissue that builds up after injury or surgery, so the body can get back to homeostasis quicker.
